Melissa Schmidt Necklaces

Glass Bubble Designer Jewelry

Melissa Schmidt is forever blowing bubbles made of glass. Transparent, opaque and speckled in colors from pale gold to bright red to cobalt blue. Clear bubbles she fills with tiny images of birds, trees, dogs. Then she strings them alone or in bunches on silver wire or silk cord so you can wear her art around your neck. Have no fear of breakage. Or the glass weighing you down. They are deceivingly strong and light.

An interior designer by trade, Melissa Schmidt made glass bead jewelry on the side for 13 years, then switched to blowing miniature bubbles. Working with a glass torch, she chooses a 1 1/2 -foot-long tube of glass - the same type used to make test tubes. She melts the end in the flame, rotating it constantly, and, "like blowing out a candle on a cake," then exhales directly into the glass tube, forming the bubble. Using tweezers, she pinches the bubble off from the tube and while it's still hot, forms a looped end for stringing. She returns to the now shorter piece of tube and repeats the process again and again until she has about 10 bubbles and just 7 inches or so of glass left.
