Leigh Elena's enameling process involves firing copper and steel in a kiln, and then applying varying techniques to achieve the individual pattern, color, and overall look for each piece. The appearance of the enamel on the surface of the finished piece is a product of applying powders and fragments of glass on the surface before firing. The end result is determined by the different colors used, the size or shape of the glass, and the kiln temperature, usually nearing 1500 degrees.
