Daniel Swarovski was born in northern Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) in 1862. His father was a glass cutter who owned a small glass factory, and young Daniel served an apprenticeship there, becoming skilled in the art of glass-cutting. In 1892, he patented an electric glass-cutting machine that facilitated the production of crystal glass. The company was founded in 1895 by Armand Kosman and Franz Weis using Daniel Swarovski's expertise at glass-cutting and his family name.
