Jayne Redman Designer Earrings

Handcrafted Designer Jewelry

Jayne Redman makes each piece by hand in 18K gold and sterling silver, decorating some surfaces with 24K gold and oxidized fine silver using Keum-bo, the ancient Korean technique of diffusion bonding. Redman's 30-plus years of metalsmithing have taught her the power of simplicity. Her forms begin as flat metal shapes and end as small wearable sculpture. Their complexity is in their conception as curving planes of origami. Many of her forms are multiples of the same shape, engineered to fit together with precise economy that results in an abstract interpretation of their botanical source material.

Jayne Redman enjoys integrating mechanics with design, allowing each piece to function in a visually intriguing way. She embosses the gold or silver with a softly burnished texture, then cuts out each element using a handmade blanking die. The edges are sanded and polished and the pieces drilled and formed using tools she has created for each shape. Occasionally she uses solder to connect components, but most connections are incorporated into the design of the item. Earwires are formed using jigs of her invention.
