Thomas Mann works with a variety of metals, thinking of them as painters think of their palettes, each metal having its own color and luster. He incorporates parts from machines, electronic instruments, costume jewelry, old postcards, and photos. These recurring but always changing parts give Mann's work its storytelling quality and theatricality. Though it isn't the only design mode in which he works, it's the one for which he and his work is best known.
